Day 2Amman City Tour — Jerash — Ajloun — Amman

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, explore the historical places in downtown Amman. You start with the visit to the Citadel to enjoy views over the hilly capital. On the Citadel itself you see remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period, like the Hercules Temple and the Umayyad Palace, and the small Archaeological Museum.

Not far away we find the Roman Theatre, which can accommodate up to 6,000 visitors. In the heart of downtown, we stroll the markets (Souq), where to find fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, clothes, household goods, and more. Then, we drive to the Roman ruins of Jerash, about 50 km away from Amman. Set in the hills of Gilead, Jerash is the best example of a Roman provincial city in the Middle East.

With your guide, see the Hippodrome, the spectacular Forum, the Roman colonnaded street, the Nymphaeum, the Temple of Artemis, and the North Theatre. Continue we drive to the Islamic castle of Ajloun, in Arabic called Qal’at Ar Rabad. In 1184 during the Crusades, an Arab general and relative of Salah ad-Din built here a fortress on higher grounds. Its purpose was to watch over the routes to the Jordan Valley and the commercial routes to Syria, as well as to protect the iron mines nearby.

There is a small museum inside the castle and don’t miss the great view over the surrounding countryside. Return transfer to your hotel in Amman.

After breakfast at the hotel, spend the day getting lost in the red rose city of Petra. Petra is the biggest attraction of Jordan and was first established around the 6th century B.C. by the Nabatean Arabs, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and laid the foundation of a commercial empire that extended into Syria.

Walk with your guide through the canyon or so-called Siq to see the most beautiful monument: The Treasury Building rising over 140 feet. Continue via the Street Facades to the Royal Tombs and Pharaoh’s Castle until the Qasr Al Bint. You will have free time to explore on your own, for instance, climb the 800 steps to the Monastery Al Deir.
