Valley of the Queens
The Valley of the Queens, located on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor, Egypt, is a lesser-known counterpart to the famed Valley of the Kings. This archaeological marvel served as the burial site for queens and royal children of Egypt’s New Kingdom (1550–1070 BCE), including the famous Tomb of Queen Nefertari, Ramses II’s wife. The tombs, intricately decorated with vibrant wall paintings and detailed hieroglyphs, reveal stories of the afterlife and religious beliefs of ancient Egypt. Many tombs were carved deep into the limestone mountains to protect the deceased from looters and harsh desert conditions. Today, the Valley of the Queens offers an unforgettable glimpse into the lives of Egypt’s elite and the artistry of ancient artisans.
