Egypt Weather in February: Mild Winter Days and Cool Nights

Mild afternoons, cold mornings: what Egypt weather in February really means for Giza, Luxor and Nile cruises, plus costs, packing and tour choices.

Egypt Weather in February: Mild Winter Days and Cool Nights Pin it

Egypt weather in February means mild, dry daytime sightseeing and genuinely cool nights: think light layers by day and a jacket after sunset, with Luxor and Aswan running warmer than Cairo. It’s one of the easier months to walk the Giza Plateau or the Theban west bank without fighting the heat, which is why February sits squarely in Egypt’s popular winter travel window. The trade-off is chilly mornings, cold Nile-cruise sundecks and occasional windy, dusty days.

This guide is for travelers deciding whether to book Egypt in February and how to structure the trip: what the temperatures feel like city by city, what to pack, how the days are best sequenced, what a package costs in euros, and which itinerary suits families, first-timers or people adding Egypt to a Turkey trip.

What Egypt weather in February actually feels like

February is Egypt’s winter. Skies are usually clear, rain is rare outside the Mediterranean coast, and the big daily story is the swing between afternoon warmth and cold nights. Forecasts vary year to year, so check a 10-day forecast for your specific cities before packing; the notes below describe the usual pattern rather than guaranteed numbers.

Cairo and the Delta

Cairo afternoons are typically comfortable for walking — shirtsleeves in direct sun, a layer in the shade. Mornings before 9:00 and evenings after sunset are noticeably cool, often dropping to around 10°C (roughly 50°F). Alexandria and the coast are cooler and get most of Egypt’s limited winter rain, so a day trip there can be grey and breezy.

Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel

Head south and daytime temperatures climb. Luxor and Aswan usually feel several degrees warmer than Cairo at midday, which is exactly why winter is the practical season for the Valley of the Kings: those tomb corridors are airless and hot even in a mild month. Desert nights in Aswan get cold, and the pre-dawn Abu Simbel convoy is genuinely chilly.

On the Nile and in the desert

Cruise sundecks are lovely between about 11:00 and 16:00 and cold the rest of the time. Wind on the water cuts the temperature further. In the Western Desert and around Siwa, nights fall away fast after dark; if you’re camping, that’s a warm sleeping bag, not a fleece.

Giza in winter: clear light and walkable temperatures, but a cold, windy plateau first thing in the morning.

Is February a good month to visit Egypt?

Yes, for sightseeing. February belongs to the high-demand winter season for Nile itineraries, so “fewer crowds” is only half true: sites are far quieter than the Christmas and New Year peak, but Giza, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings still fill by mid-morning. The realistic win is comfort, not emptiness.

Two things to check for your dates. First, Ramadan can fall in or near February in the coming years, which changes opening hours, restaurant rhythms and traffic — confirm the dates before booking and expect quieter afternoons and busier evenings. Second, late winter is khamsin season’s early edge: an occasional dusty, hazy day can flatten photos and disrupt balloon flights in Luxor.

How to get there and how long each leg takes

Almost every trip starts in Cairo. From there, distances are covered by short domestic flights rather than long drives, which is what makes a one-week Egypt trip realistic.

  1. Fly into Cairo International Airport. Transfers to central Cairo or Giza hotels usually take 45–75 minutes depending on traffic.
  2. Cairo to Luxor or Cairo to Aswan: a domestic flight of about an hour. On our packages these flights are included in the tour price.
  3. Aswan to Luxor: covered by the Nile cruise over several days, or by road in roughly 3.5 hours on the land-based itineraries.
  4. Aswan to Abu Simbel: an early-morning road trip of around three to four hours each way by minibus, so a 3:30–4:00 am start.
  5. Cairo to Alexandria: a long day trip by road. If you’d rather go independently, our guide to getting from Cairo to Alexandria by train, bus or taxi compares the options.

Pro Tip

Book the Abu Simbel morning for a day when you don’t also have a flight. You’ll be up before 4:00 am and back mid-afternoon; stacking a domestic departure on top of that is how people end up exhausted on day three of a nine-day trip.

What a February trip to Egypt costs

Package prices below are our starting rates per person and vary by departure date and party size. Site admission in Egypt is sold in Egyptian pounds and is revised periodically, so we don’t quote amounts here — confirm current fees on the official Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities ticket page, and note that entering a pyramid’s interior and photography permits are usually charged separately.

Best time of day for each site in February

Because February days are short and cool at both ends, sequencing matters more than in summer. Aim your outdoor walking at the warm middle of the day and your indoor visits at the edges.

  • Giza Plateau: arrive at opening for thin crowds and soft light, but wear a windbreaker — the open plateau is cold and exposed early.
  • Valley of the Kings: go as early as your guide can arrange. Tomb interiors hold heat and humidity even in winter, and tour buses concentrate from about 9:30. You can read more about the site on our Valley of the Kings page.
  • Karnak and Luxor Temple: Karnak in the morning, Luxor Temple late afternoon into early evening when it’s lit.
  • Egyptian Museum and Coptic Cairo: good rain-or-wind fallbacks and good early-afternoon choices.
  • Felucca sailing in Aswan: late afternoon, with a jacket. It gets cold on the water fast once the sun drops.
  • Abu Simbel: pre-dawn departure, temples in the morning light, back by afternoon.

What to pack for Egypt in February

  • Layers: t-shirts plus a fleece or sweater, and a windproof jacket for mornings, sundecks and desert evenings
  • Long trousers or a long skirt and a scarf for mosques and churches
  • Closed walking shoes with grip — Saqqara sand, temple ramps and tomb steps are uneven
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses; the winter sun is still strong at midday
  • A small torch for dim tomb corners, and cash in small notes for tips and site extras
  • A dust-resistant bag or lens cloth for windy days
  • Any medication you need; pharmacies are widespread in Cairo but brands differ

Families and mobility notes

February suits kids better than summer does, simply because nobody is overheating on the plateau. Plan for shorter days and an afternoon break at the hotel. For limited mobility, know that the Valley of the Kings involves ramps and steps into tombs, Abu Simbel means a long minibus day, and cruise ships have stairs between decks. A private guided format gives you the flexibility to skip or swap a site; ask us before booking rather than on the day.

How to combine Cairo, the Nile and the extras

Three or four nights in Cairo covers Giza, Saqqara and Memphis, the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Old Cairo, and Khan El Khalili. If you only have a week, pair Cairo with either Luxor or a short cruise. With nine or ten days you can do Cairo, a cruise between Luxor and Aswan, Abu Simbel and still fit Alexandria. The Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae usually sit in one Aswan morning. For a wider look at the country’s sites, see our complete Egypt guide.

Which Egypt tour fits which traveler in February

The right itinerary depends on how much moving around you want to do in a cool-weather week.

If you have limited time and want the headline sites without a cruise, the 6-Day Splendid Egypt Tour: Cairo and Luxor keeps you in hotels throughout, with included domestic flights and two full Cairo sightseeing days. It suits first-timers and anyone who prefers a fixed base over packing and repacking.

If the Nile is the point, the 7-Day Egypt Tour: Cairo, Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor puts three nights on a full-board cruise with Kom Ombo, Edfu, Karnak and the west bank, and gives you a private Cairo day covering Giza, the Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo and Khan El Khalili. Abu Simbel is offered as a paid optional excursion on this one rather than being included.

Want Abu Simbel guaranteed in the plan? The 9-Day Egypt Tour: Explore Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel includes the Abu Simbel visit by land, four nights on a Nile cruise and guiding by a professional Egyptologist throughout. It’s the fuller history trip for travelers who don’t want to choose.

Adding Turkey while temperatures are mild in both countries? The 12-Day Turkey and Egypt Tour runs Istanbul, Kusadasi and Cappadocia before the Egyptian leg. Note that the Istanbul-to-Cairo flight is not included on the combined itineraries, and Cappadocia in February is cold with a real chance of balloon cancellations — check the day-by-day on the tour page before you commit.

Pro Tip

Domestic flight schedules drive the order of sightseeing days on every Egypt package, and that order can shift. Leave at least one buffer night in Cairo before your international departure rather than flying home the same evening you return from Luxor or Aswan.

Common mistakes travelers make in February

Packing for summer is the big one — people arrive with sandals and shorts and then shiver through a 4:00 am convoy. Second, underestimating short daylight: sunset comes early, so a late start can cost you a whole site. Third, assuming winter means empty; book cruise cabins and Abu Simbel spots well ahead for February departures. Finally, planning a beach swim in the same trip. The Mediterranean is cold; the Red Sea is the warmer option if you want water time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Egypt

How cold does it get at night in Egypt in February?

Cool enough for a jacket. Cairo and Aswan nights commonly fall to around 10°C (about 50°F), and the desert and Nile sundecks feel colder because of wind. Check a current forecast for your dates, since year-to-year variation is real.

Is February a good time for a Nile cruise?

Yes. Daytime temperatures make temple stops at Kom Ombo, Edfu and Karnak comfortable, and cruise departures run on set weekly days. Bring warm layers for early mornings and evenings on deck, and book ahead, since February is part of the busy winter season.

What does an Egypt trip in February cost?

Our multi-day packages start at €1,460 per person for six days and €2,490 for the ten-day Nile cruise itinerary, with the exact rate depending on your dates and group size. International flights, the Egypt entry visa, drinks and optional excursions are extra on all of them.

Do I need to book site tickets in advance?

On our guided packages the entrance fees listed in each itinerary are included, so you don’t buy them separately. Extras such as entering a pyramid’s interior or the Pyramids Sound and Light show are charged additionally, and the show has to be reserved before travel. For independent visits, confirm current fees on the official Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities ticket page.

Is February good for visiting Egypt with kids?

It’s one of the better months, because the heat that makes summer difficult at Giza and in the tombs isn’t a factor. Keep days short, build in a hotel break after lunch, and think carefully before adding the pre-dawn Abu Simbel run with young children.

Can I combine Egypt with Istanbul in one February trip?

Yes, and we run combined itineraries of 9, 10 and 12 days that start in Istanbul and continue to Cairo. The Istanbul-to-Cairo flight is not included in the tour price on these packages, so check the inclusions on the specific tour page. Expect genuinely cold weather in Cappadocia at that time of year.

How many days do I need in Egypt?

Six days covers Cairo and Luxor at a reasonable pace. Seven to eight lets you add a Nile cruise or Aswan; nine or ten is what you want for Abu Simbel and Alexandria as well. Where you sleep matters too — see our guide to choosing where to stay in Egypt.

If February works for your calendar, the next step is matching the length of trip to the sites you care about most. Browse our Egypt tours for day-by-day itineraries, inclusions and current departure dates, and tell us your travel window so we can check cruise and flight availability for you.
