Pin itEight days in Turkey is enough for the classic first-trip loop: one full day in Istanbul plus a Bosphorus morning, one day each at Pamukkale and Ephesus, two days in Cappadocia and a last night back in Istanbul. The order matters. Going Istanbul, then the Aegean coast, then Cappadocia and back to Istanbul uses short domestic flights instead of long overland drives. This 8 days in Turkey itinerary gives you each day’s plan, realistic timings and which extras are optional.
This guide is for first-time visitors from the US or Europe who fly round-trip into Istanbul, want the big four (Istanbul, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Cappadocia) and don’t mind early starts. It is not a beach itinerary. Eight days leaves no room for coast time beyond a free evening in Kuşadası.

Why this route order saves you a day
The common mistake is flying straight from Istanbul to Cappadocia and then trying to reach Pamukkale. Cappadocia sits in central Anatolia, while Pamukkale and Ephesus are in the west, near the Aegean. Connecting them by road costs you most of a day on a bus.
Flying Istanbul to Izmir first puts you close to both Pamukkale and Ephesus, with Kuşadası as a two-night base. From Izmir you fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir for Cappadocia, then fly back to Istanbul at the end. Three flights, no wasted road days.
Day 1: Arrive in Istanbul and Keep the First Evening Easy
Most transatlantic flights land at Istanbul Airport (IST); some European carriers use Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Plan nothing ambitious for arrival day. Check in, walk your neighborhood and eat early.
If you still have energy, take a stroll along İstiklal Avenue and around Taksim Square for the modern side of the city, or book an evening Bosphorus dinner cruise. Both are optional. If you haven’t picked a base yet, our guide to where to stay in Istanbul compares the neighborhoods first-timers usually choose.
Overnight: Istanbul.
Day 2: Istanbul Old City: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Grand Bazaar
This is your one full sightseeing day in the Old City, so start around 8:30 AM. All four main sights sit within walking distance of each other in Sultanahmet.

Morning: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
Hagia Sophia was built as a cathedral, later became a mosque, then a museum, and was converted back into a mosque in 2020. Arrangements for non-worshipping visitors have changed in recent years, so check the current visitor route and admission before you go. The Blue Mosque across the square is an active place of worship, and tourist visits pause around prayer times. Between the two, the Hippodrome holds the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpent Column.
Afternoon: Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar
Topkapi Palace was the Ottoman sultans’ residence for roughly four centuries. Give it at least two hours; the Harem is a separate section, so decide in advance if you want it. Finish at the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest covered markets in the world. It closes on Sundays, so avoid putting this day on a Sunday if shopping matters to you. For haggling advice, see our Grand Bazaar shopping guide.
Pro Tip
Dress for the mosques from the start of the day: shoulders and knees covered, and women should carry a headscarf. It saves you from going back to the hotel between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
Overnight: Istanbul.
Day 3: Bosphorus Cruise, Then Fly to Izmir
Use the morning for a Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü. The strait links the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and separates Europe from Asia. From the water you pass Dolmabahçe Palace, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Ortaköy Mosque, the Bosphorus Bridge and old wooden waterfront mansions. The Spice Market sits right next to the Eminönü piers if you want a quick look before boarding.
Head back for your luggage around midday and transfer to the airport. The flight to Izmir takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. From Izmir Airport it is a road transfer south to Kuşadası, a coastal town close to Ephesus. Your evening is free.
Overnight: Kuşadası.
Day 4: Pamukkale and Hierapolis Day Trip
This is the longest day of the trip. Group tours typically pick up in Kuşadası around 7:30 AM, leave Selçuk at 8:30 AM and reach Pamukkale around 11:45 AM, with a short rest stop on the roughly three-hour drive. You get back to Kuşadası around 7:30 PM.

What you see
Pamukkale’s white terraces, often called the Cotton Castle, were formed by calcium deposits from mineral-rich water. On the plateau above sits Hierapolis, a Roman spa city with a theatre, basilica and Roman baths. Most guided visits run from about 1:00 PM, followed by some free time.
The Antique Pool
The Antique Pool (often called Cleopatra’s Pool), where you swim among fallen Roman columns, is an optional extra with its own entrance fee. Confirm it is open for your date and bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to use it. Budget details are in our Pamukkale trip cost breakdown.
Overnight: Kuşadası.
Day 5: Ephesus, Then an Evening Flight to Cappadocia
Check out after breakfast and start around 8:30 AM. Ephesus is a short drive from Kuşadası, and mornings are cooler and less crowded than midday.

Ephesus and nearby sites
Inside the ancient city you walk Curetes Street past the Temple of Hadrian to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Around Selçuk, typical add-ons include the scant remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the House of the Virgin Mary and the 14th-century Isa Bey Mosque. The site is open to the sun with very little shade, so carry water.
Getting to Cappadocia
Sightseeing wraps up around 4:00 PM, then you transfer to Izmir Airport for an evening flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir, usually connecting in Istanbul. Expect a late arrival at your cave hotel. It’s a long day, but it saves a full day of driving.
Overnight: Cappadocia.
Day 6: Optional Sunrise Balloon and North Cappadocia

The balloon ride (optional)
Balloon flights leave before dawn, with hotel pickup well before breakfast, and cost extra. They depend on weather and can be canceled at short notice for safety. Book ahead, and accept that it isn’t guaranteed.
Pro Tip
Book your balloon for Day 6, not Day 7. If winds ground the flights, you can ask the operator about a Day 7 slot before you leave the region. Refunds and rebooking follow the balloon operator’s terms.
North Cappadocia sights
After breakfast, around 9:30 AM, the classic northern route covers Devrent Valley, where the rocks look like animals, and Paşabağ (Monks Valley) with its mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys. Then comes Avanos, a pottery town on the Kızılırmak River, and the Zelve Open Air Museum’s cave churches and dwellings. The day ends with a photo stop near Uçhisar’s rock citadel, back at the hotel around 4:00 PM. In the evening you can add one paid extra such as a Turkish Night show with dinner, a Whirling Dervish ceremony or an ATV ride.
Overnight: Cappadocia.
Day 7: South Cappadocia, Then Fly Back to Istanbul
Check out after breakfast. The southern route starts in Red Valley, known for its rock-cut churches, and continues on a roughly 5 km dirt-trail hike through Rose Valley. Footing is uneven and shade is limited, so wear proper walking shoes.
After Çavuşin village and Pigeon Valley, finish at an underground city such as Kaymakli Underground City. Its passages are low and narrow. If you dislike enclosed spaces, you can wait outside. For more on the region, read our essential guide to Cappadocia.
Return flights to Istanbul leave in the evening, so expect a late landing. The stated flight and arrival windows differ between our tours, so check the page for your specific tour before booking anything onward, and don’t plan an international departure the same night until you have confirmed your actual arrival time.
Overnight: Istanbul.
Day 8: Last Morning in Istanbul and Departure
How much you do depends on your flight time. With a free morning, head to Balat’s colorful streets on the Golden Horn, or visit the Chora Church, famous for its Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. It now operates as a mosque, so check current visiting rules. Otherwise, pick up anything you missed on Day 2.
Give yourself plenty of time to reach the airport. Istanbul traffic is slow at rush hour, and IST is a long terminal to walk.
Should you book a tour or plan this 8-day route yourself?
You can book the flights, hotels and day tours yourself. The trade-off is timing: the tight connections on Days 3, 5 and 7 are where independent plans usually slip. The tours below cover all or part of this route; the shorter ones differ from it in ways noted in the table and below.
| Tour | Length | From | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Days Seven Wonders of Turkey Tour | 8 days / 7 nights | €1,460 | Travelers who want the full Istanbul, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Cappadocia loop arranged as one group trip |
| 5-Day Turkey Tour from Izmir: Ephesus, Pamukkale & Cappadocia with Flights | 5 days / 4 nights | €815 | Travelers who handle Istanbul, the Bosphorus cruise and their own way to Izmir or Kuşadası, then join a guided group there (the Istanbul to Izmir flight is not included) |
| 2-Day Cappadocia Tour from Istanbul (Flights + Cave Hotel) | 2 days / 1 night | €418 | Travelers who want only Cappadocia handled; it starts from an Istanbul hotel with a flight from Istanbul and includes one Cappadocia night, not two |
The 8 Days Seven Wonders of Turkey Tour starts with an airport transfer and a free day in Istanbul, then covers the Old City, the Bosphorus, the flight to Izmir, Pamukkale and Ephesus, and continues to Cappadocia. Check the tour page for the final days’ details and current inclusions.
If you’d rather explore Istanbul at your own pace, the 5-Day Turkey Tour from Izmir: Ephesus, Pamukkale & Cappadocia with Flights can follow your Istanbul days. It begins with arrival at Izmir Airport, Izmir city center or Kuşadası Port and a free day in Kuşadası, so it doesn’t include the Istanbul to Izmir flight or the Day 3 Bosphorus cruise. It does include the Izmir to Kayseri and Kayseri to Istanbul flights, two nights in Kuşadası, two in a Cappadocia cave hotel, breakfasts and lunches, and entrance fees for listed sites. The balloon, dinners and your Istanbul airport transfer at the end are extra.
The 2-Day Cappadocia Tour from Istanbul (Flights + Cave Hotel) follows a different pattern from this itinerary. It starts with a 4:00 AM pickup from an Istanbul hotel and an Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevşehir flight, and includes one night in Cappadocia. If you use it, you’d need to return from the Aegean to Istanbul first and accept one Cappadocia night instead of two. All three are group tours with shopping stops, and prices vary by date and party size.
Best time of year for 8 days in Turkey
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the easiest months for this route. Days are comfortable for the Rose Valley hike and the open ruins at Ephesus and Hierapolis. Summer brings strong heat at the western sites, so start early and carry water. Winter can bring cold and snow to Cappadocia and more balloon cancellations, but smaller crowds in Istanbul.
Whatever the season, the walking is real. Expect uneven stones, steps and dirt trails most days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Turkey
Is 8 days enough to see Turkey?
Eight days covers Istanbul, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Cappadocia at a steady pace. In Istanbul you get one full sightseeing day plus the Day 3 morning cruise and whatever time your arrival and departure days allow; then one day at each Aegean site and two touring days in Cappadocia. There’s no slack for beaches or extra regions, so add days if you want coast time.
What is the best order for an 8-day Turkey itinerary?
Start in Istanbul, fly to Izmir for Pamukkale and Ephesus, fly on to Cappadocia and fly back to Istanbul. This avoids the long overland journey between Cappadocia and the Aegean. It also puts your last night in Istanbul, close to your international flight.
How many domestic flights does this route need?
Three: Istanbul to Izmir, Izmir to Kayseri or Nevşehir (usually connecting in Istanbul), and Cappadocia back to Istanbul. Pamukkale is reached by road from Kuşadası as a long day trip.
Is the Cappadocia balloon ride included in tours?
On the tours listed here, the balloon ride is an optional extra at additional cost. Flights depend on weather and can be canceled at short notice. Booking it for your first Cappadocia morning gives you a possible second chance.
Can you swim at Pamukkale?
The Antique Pool at Hierapolis is an optional swim with a separate entrance fee. Confirm it is open for your date and pack a swimsuit if you plan to use it.
Is this itinerary suitable for families or travelers with limited mobility?
It works for families with kids who can handle long days and walking on uneven ground. The Rose Valley hike is about 5 km on dirt trails, and underground city passages are low and narrow. Tell your guide in advance if you’d prefer to skip either section.
With 8 days in Turkey, the smartest route is Istanbul, the Aegean coast for Pamukkale and Ephesus, then Cappadocia and back to Istanbul: three flights, no wasted road days.
